Weghorst vows to skip World Cup final after Dutch exit

🇳🇱 By 4All Football Editorial ·

Wout Weghorst announced at 14:57 today that he will not watch the World Cup final, after the Netherlands were eliminated by Morocco on penalties in the last‑32 round at the end of June. The decisive statement underscores his lingering frustration with the tournament’s conclusion.

The Dutch national team fell to Morocco in the last‑32 knockout stage, losing the shoot‑out after a goalless draw, which ended their World Cup campaign in late June.

Weghorst, the newly signed striker for FC Twente, confirmed his role at the club while discussing his feelings about the tournament.

Immediately after the elimination, he boarded a plane with his family, saying, "For the kids, especially. It felt good to switch off, take time with family and have no football. We spent a pleasant eight days in Ibiza, which was great. Now back to it."

During the Ibiza break he followed the World Cup only sparingly, remarking, "It doesn’t matter much to me, I didn’t really follow it. I saw a few things, but I can hardly watch it, I must say. So I’m fine if it’s on Monday."

When asked about the upcoming final on Sunday, he replied, "Watching the final? I don’t think so… It will just pass, I think ‘let it be, play on and it’s over.’ It certainly isn’t the memory I hoped for."

The final will be contested on Sunday, yet Weghorst’s decision to stay away highlights how the early exit has left a lasting disappointment for the striker.
