Weghorst slams Dutch side after World Cup, warns of fallout

🇳🇱 By 4All Football Editorial ·

Wout Weghorst, the 34‑year‑old target man, delivered a scathing assessment of the Nederlands elftal after what he described as a failed WK, saying the squad showed a clear lack of personality and that fundamental changes are required.

He spoke to today at 20:53, offering his unfiltered view of the national team’s performance. The interview was recorded and immediately published, drawing swift reactions from fans and pundits alike.

Weghorst, who has earned a reputation as a reliable forward, did not mince words when he opened his remarks. "Disappointment dominates, of course. We didn’t force anything. We didn’t bring the whole World Cup you want to bring," he said, comparing the current campaign with the previous tournament.

He specifically referenced the Qatar WK, where Oranje under the guidance of bondscoach Louis van Gaal reached the semi‑finals. That earlier run, he noted, was driven by a clear mission that the team radiated in every match.

"This WK felt different at times. You’re at the World Cup, you try to give everything with full conviction, but then those penalties…" Weghorst continued, highlighting moments of pressure and missed opportunities that, in his view, exposed a shortage of character.

He added that the squad showed too little personality when it mattered most, a shortfall that he believes cost them success. "There must be clear changes if we want to be successful," he asserted, urging a shift in mindset.

Weghorst made it clear he would never be able to thank the Dutch national team, despite the pride of representing his country. He told the publication that he has already conveyed his opinions to the responsible officials.

"You do a lot for the team, then the picture must match your conviction and mindset. I think it’s time we take steps. This will undoubtedly provoke something again, but this is simply what I think," he said, emphasizing that his focus now is on performance.

Looking ahead, Weghorst believes the Netherlands must act decisively to restore the personality and drive that once propelled them to the semi‑finals, warning that his comments are likely to spark further debate within the football community.
