Real Madrid’s missed chance on Premier League defender Pedro Porro
Real Madrid sought to reinforce the right‑back position after years of scouting, eyeing Premier League defender Pedro Porro as a potential successor to Dani Carvajal, but ultimately opted for Dutch international Denzel Dumfries, secured for around €20 million in the summer transfer window.
Real Madrid’s interest in Porro dates back nearly a decade. In 2016 and again in 2017, when the Spanish right‑back left Rayo Vallecano as a youth player, the club’s academy recruitment department tried to bring him to Valdebebas. Girona ultimately secured the player by offering a clearer pathway to first‑team football.
According to AS, Porro’s development at Sporting CP and his emergence as a standout performer for Tottenham Hotspur have kept him firmly on the Merengues’ scouting radar. Inside Real Madrid, he has long been admired as a possible successor to Dani Carvajal. A photo by Florencia Tan Jun illustrated his rise at Sporting CP.
During squad planning meetings, Porro’s name was discussed repeatedly, yet he never became the primary target. Head coach Jose Mourinho is reported to be a fan of the player’s qualities, but the club’s long‑term plan centred on Trent Alexander‑Arnold and financial constraints. Signing Porro would likely have required an investment exceeding €50 million, a fee the club found difficult to justify.
Instead, Real Madrid opted for the Dutch international Denzel Dumfries, whose signing cost around €20 million. Although older than Porro, Dumfries offered a considerably cheaper solution for the right‑back role. The signing was completed in the summer transfer window.
Porro’s performances at the World Cup elevated his reputation as one of the world’s best full‑backs, prompting several clubs to intensify interest. Tottenham Hotspur responded by extending his contract until 2031 and rewarding him with one of the highest salaries in the squad. Despite this, Real Madrid never submitted a formal offer.
For now, Porro remains happy in London while Real Madrid continue with their current options at right‑back. At 26 years old, the possibility of their paths crossing in the future cannot be completely ruled out.
