Nigel de Jong admits Dutch ambitions fell short after round‑of‑16 exit

Technical director Nigel de Jong described the Netherlands' World Cup campaign as a disappointment after the team fell to Morocco in the round‑of‑16 on penalties, saying the pre‑tournament target of reaching the semi‑final and the ambition to become world champions were far from being achieved.

De Jong said, "The objective was the semi‑final and the ambition was to become world champion," and added that the team fell far short of those goals. He emphasized that the statement was a collective pre‑tournament commitment.

He noted that emotions were still running high because the loss to Morocco had just occurred, describing disappointment as the appropriate word. De Jong said the squad would return to their hotel together to process the defeat and close the chapter as best they could.

According to De Jong, the KNVB had established clear agreements before the tournament concerning the role of the head coach and his technical staff. He said these agreements will be reviewed in the post‑tournament evaluation phase. He indicated that the evaluation will determine any further actions regarding the coaching staff.

De Jong cautioned against jumping ahead of the evaluation, insisting the priority was to handle the disappointment properly. He remarked that walking into the dressing room to see staff and players still showed high emotions, underscoring the early exit's impact.

Head coach Ronald Koeman said it was too early to discuss his future after the elimination. "That will come from tomorrow. Or does it matter? I have my thoughts about it. But it seems not the moment to say anything now," he added.
