Marseille’s wage woes could hand AC Milan a bargain for Højbjerg

🇮🇹 By 4All Football Editorial ·

His contract with Les Phocéens runs until 2028, but AC Milan are reportedly considering Olympique de Marseille’s Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (30) as a potential midfield signing, midfielder’s deal could become attractive to the Lombards if Marseille’s financial strain forces a price cut. Milan’s interest aligns with their aim to reinforce the centre of the park.

His contract with Les Phocéens runs until 2028. Marseille’s financial difficulties and the need to reduce their wage bill could enable the Lombards to secure the Dane at a favourable price. The French club is commonly called Les Phocéens.

There is no immediate rush for the Lombards, who will first give their new manager, Ruben Amorim, time to assess the quality of his squad. Amorim’s evaluation will determine whether a midfield reinforcement becomes a priority.

Should Amorim express a need to sign a midfielder, the trail leading to Højbjerg could be pursued swiftly. In that scenario, Milan would move quickly to negotiate with Marseille.

In Milan, the former Tottenham Hotspur man would also have the opportunity to be reunited with Adrien Rabiot (31). Højbjerg and Rabiot played together for Marseille during the 2024-25 season.

The Copenhagen-born player finishes a busy season with 43 appearances across all competitions. He contributed five goals and five assists during that campaign.

Marseille’s need to trim wages reflects a wider trend of clubs seeking financial stability in a pressured transfer market. Such circumstances can create opportunities for clubs like AC Milan to acquire experienced talent at reduced cost.
