Manchester United's left‑back quest leans on Serie A veteran

🇬🇧 By 4All Football Editorial ·

Man United have identified a clear need on the left flank, with a vacancy at left‑back prompting a Serie A‑focused search that has zeroed in on 27‑year‑old Carlos Augusto, who has amassed 100 league appearances for Inter Milan, a fact first highlighted by a journalist as part of the club’s recruitment plan.

Ben Jacobs first reported that Manchester United have examined Inter Milan defender Carlos Augusto and also evaluated West Ham’s Oliver Scarles as they shape plans for the left side. The points raised by the scouting team show how the club is mapping out a clear left‑back search.

The enquiry for Augusto was made in April, indicating groundwork rather than a fresh push. United see the timing as a key detail that shapes the intent behind the potential move.

Jacobs said, “I’ve heard that Manchester United made an enquiry actually in April for Carlos Augusto,” adding that the player “is capable of playing in left midfield or at left‑back.”

Augusto, now 27, has logged 100 league appearances for Inter and collected two Serie A titles, offering reliability and tactical intelligence. His versatility lets him cover left‑back, left midfield and even other positions across the back line, though United view versatility as a bonus rather than the primary reason to sign him.

Scarles, aged 20, provides a lower‑cost alternative who can operate as a left‑back, wing‑back or further forward. West Ham’s recent relegation may make his situation more fluid, but United must separate raw potential from immediate readiness.

Squad planning remains a wider balancing act: United are focused on adding midfield depth as Manuel Ugarte faces a lengthy absence, while also targeting a left winger and an extra forward. The left‑back search therefore fits into a broader strategy to stabilise multiple areas.

Our view is that United are finally identifying logical profiles for the left side. Augusto brings proven experience that could raise the floor immediately, whereas Scarles offers developmental upside, but the club must decide whether to prioritise certainty or potential.
