Liverpool’s wage‑cut fuels Szoboszlai’s rise to top earner

🇬🇧 By 4All Football Editorial ·
Dominik Szoboszlai, the Hungarian captain, has signed a five‑year extension with Liverpool that runs to 2031, making him one of the Reds’ top earners after the club trimmed its wage bill by off‑loading several high‑paid stars. Fabrizio Romano confirmed the new deal, noting that the wage‑bill reduction created the flexibility to meet Szoboszlai’s substantial salary expectations. The extension ties the midfielder to Anfield until 2031. Liverpool cleared out several high‑earning players over the summer, with Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konaté departing. Those exits slashed the club’s payroll and opened room for the Hungarian’s raise. Szoboszlai’s original contract was due to expire in 2028, but the new agreement pushes his stay to 2031. Romano estimates the weekly wage at roughly £300,000, a significant rise from the £150,000 he earned under his previous deal. That figure places him just behind Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, both reported to earn about £400,000 per week on their latest renewals. Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo have also secured deals worth £277,000 and £250,000 per week respectively. Romano warned that if negotiations had lingered, Liverpool might have faced offers for the Hungarian captain next summer, with several top clubs already monitoring his situation. He added that the timely agreement prevented a potential transfer scramble. Speaking to his YouTube audience, Szoboszlai announced, “Dominik Szoboszlai signs a new deal at Liverpool — and it’s here we go, it’s done, it’s all confirmed.” He praised the club, saying his performance and leadership had been “fantastic news for Liverpool” during a difficult season. The renewal is described as a huge boost for outgoing sporting director Richard Hughes, securing a key asset before his departure. Hughes’ ability to lock in the captain reflects the club’s strategic focus on stability. With the contract settled, new head coach Andoni Iraola can now plan for the long‑term future with Szoboszlai at the heart of his project. The Hungarian midfielder’s extended stay gives the Reds a clear creative and leadership figure moving forward.
