Leipzig bolsters defence with French centre‑back Maxime Estève

🇩🇪 By 4All Football Editorial ·

Leipzig have secured French centre‑back Maxime Estève from Burnley, signing the 24‑year‑old on Friday as the Bundesliga side looks to reinforce a back line after a recent coaching change. The defender, who will wear the No. 3 jersey, has signed a contract until 2031, addressing a defensive gap as the club prepares for the new campaign.

Leipzig, Germany, announced that the 24‑year‑old defender has agreed a contract running to 2031. He will wear the No. 3 jersey for the club in the upcoming Bundesliga season.

According to Kicker magazine, Leipzig will pay €25 million for Esteve, with potential bonuses that could increase the total fee. The club sees the French centre‑back’s height and athleticism as key attributes for its defensive setup.

Sporting director Marcel Schäfer said, “He has many of the qualities we were looking for in this position – height, athleticism, a strong left foot, confidence in possession and the ability to step out and defend proactively.” He added that Estève is “positive in the way he plays, a tough tackler, vocal and brings a huge amount of energy to the pitch, a natural leader.”

The signing marks the first direct acquisition for the energy‑drink‑manufacturer‑backed club since Martin Demichelis took over as coach, replacing the dismissed Ole Werner. Leipzig’s recent coaching change prompted the search for a defender to fill the identified gap.

Midfielder Brajan Gruda will stay at Leipzig for another season on loan from Brighton, with an option to make the move permanent for a reported €30 million fee. The club had already secured midfielder Rocco Reitz from Borussia Mönchengladbach in March.

Ivory Coast teenager Yan Diomande, who last month said he expects to leave Leipzig for Paris Saint‑Germain, remains under contract, with Schäfer confirming the 19‑year‑old will play the next season at the German side. Diomande’s future remains a topic of speculation despite the club’s statement.

Estève was captured in action during a Premier League match between Crystal Palace and Burnley in London on 11 February 2026, a photograph by Dave Shopland highlighting his composure on the ball. The image underscores the defender’s experience at the highest level of English football.
