La Liga Athletic blocks Barcelona Laporte bid this summer

Barcelona’s pursuit of experienced Spain international Aymeric Laporte has been halted after Athletic Club declared there has been no contact from the Catalan giants, confirming the defender will remain with the Basque side this summer, and will feature prominently in their upcoming campaign.

Interest in Laporte grew during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he impressed alongside Pau Cubarsi at the heart of Spain’s defence. Their performances attracted attention from several clubs across Europe.

Analysts noted that Laporte’s experience and his ability to operate in a possession‑based system made him a natural fit for Hansi Flick’s style at Barcelona. His defensive qualities were seen as aligning with the Catalan side’s tactical philosophy.

Athletic Club sporting director Mikel Gonzalez said the club has not received any contact, official or unofficial, from Barcelona’s board regarding Laporte. He added that no negotiations of any kind have taken place and that media reports are merely rumours.

Gonzalez emphasized that Laporte is a key player in Athletic’s plans for the new season, citing his technical ability and accumulated experience. He stated the club has never considered letting him go during the current summer transfer window.

Despite the denial, Laporte remains on Barcelona’s radar as a potential target for future recruitment. The club’s summer recruitment plans continue to feature defensive reinforcement as a talking point.
