From Damm to Flick Barcelona: teen’s meteoric climb
Alex Gonzalez, the 17‑year‑old Spanish midfielder, has leapt from playing for Damm in the Division de Honor Juvenil as recently as February to training with FC Barcelona’s senior squad under Hansi Flick, a dramatic progression that underscores the club’s rapid promotion of the teenager.
Alex Gonzalez is a native of Spain, adding to the club’s pool of Spanish talent.
After signing for Barcelona, Gonzalez debuted for the club’s Under‑19 side in early April. His performances earned him a surprise invitation to the first‑team pre‑season camp.
He completed five days of pre‑season training with the senior squad, a detail highlighted by SPORT. The intensive stint marked a rapid progression from youth football to the club’s elite environment.
During the camp he trained alongside established first‑team players such as Alejandro Balde, Marc Bernal and goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. Sharing drills with the senior internationals gave him a glimpse of top‑level standards.

Barcelona have secured Gonzalez on a professional contract that runs until 2028, but the club expects him to feature prominently for the reserve side this season. Fitness coach Benjamin Kugel designed double training sessions that Gonzalez completed in the opening week of camp, and he was praised for his excellent physical condition after arriving from an individual summer programme. Senior players and coaches have helped him settle off the pitch, with academy graduates Hafiz Gariba and Ebrima Tunkara instrumental in easing his adaptation. Friday’s afternoon session featured an 11‑v‑11 practice match in which Gonzalez was actively involved; his side did not win, but the game offered valuable experience of senior‑team pace and intensity. Gonzalez is expected to remain with Flick’s group at the start of next week and could earn his first pre‑season minutes in Barcelona’s friendly against Europa on July 24. He may also link up with Juliano Belletti’s Barça Atletic squad later in the campaign, underscoring Barcelona’s belief in his potential and setting the stage for further growth.
