French Lens chase perfect fit: Nawrocki departs Celtic

French Ligue 1 runners‑up RC Lens have signed 25‑year‑old defender Maik Nawrocki from Celtic, ending his loan spell at Hannover 96. The permanent move follows a deal struck with the Scottish champions.

Nawrocki had featured for Celtic in pre‑season, a period captured by Getty Images. His performances were noted during the club’s summer preparations.

Lens sporting director Jean‑Louis Leca explained the recruitment, describing Nawrocki as a “tough, uncompromising defender who understands the demands of playing in a back three”. Leca added that the Polish centre‑back is comfortable on the ball and brings athletic power and aerial prowess. He believes the 25‑year‑old still has room for growth under a coaching staff that values his profile.

The former Poland Under‑21 international spent last season on loan at Hannover 96, where the German side finished fourth in the second tier. His experience in Germany’s league adds a competitive edge to Lens’ defence.

He did not feature in Celtic manager Martin O’Neill’s plans, and the Scottish club opted to allow his permanent departure. O’Neill’s side, the reigning Scottish champions, therefore freed a squad position.

Celtic originally bought Nawrocki from Legia Warsaw in 2023. He made 18 appearances for the Glasgow club, 12 of them as a starter. His final outing came in a 5‑1 victory over Aberdeen in May 2025, where he also scored his only goal for Celtic.

For Lens, Nawrocki is expected to slot into their three‑man central defence and develop further under the current coaching team. The club anticipates his athleticism and aerial ability will strengthen their back line.

Celtic, meanwhile, can redirect resources toward players fitting O’Neill’s tactical vision. The departure marks the end of a brief, limited spell for the Polish defender at the Scottish champions.
