FIFA opens probe after Argentine banner sparks Falklands controversy

FIFA has launched an official investigation into the incident that followed the World Cup semi‑final between England and Argentina, after Argentine players unfurled a banner on the pitch reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” – a statement that the Falkland Islands belong to Argentina. The banner touched a highly sensitive topic, directly referencing the 1982 Falklands War fought between Great Britain and Argentina, a conflict that continues to evoke strong feelings more than four decades later. Its appearance on the world stage reignited debate over the disputed territory. FIFA’s statutes normally prohibit political messages on the field. The Argentine Football Association was previously fined more than €20,000 in 2014 after a similar banner appeared during a friendly match against Slovenia. “As the standard procedure dictates, the independent disciplinary committee of FIFA is currently reviewing the match reports and examining the relevant circumstances before deciding on possible further steps based on FIFA’s disciplinary regulations,” the governing body said.
