Everton's £24.5m gamble on Hackney tests Moyes' budget
Everton have secured Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough for a total £24.5 million, paying £16.5 million up‑front and adding performance‑related add‑ons. After a season where the team struggled to create chances, the signing is seen as a key investment.
The Times first reported the deal, noting that Middlesbrough had turned down several early offers before the clubs reached an agreement over the weekend. Hackney made his desire to leave clear, and Everton outpaced other top‑flight suitors to secure his signature.
Everton will pay an initial £16.5 million in cash, with the remaining £8 million structured as performance clauses. Middlesbrough stand to receive an extra £5 million if Hackney meets appearance targets and a further £3 million for achievements such as Champions League qualification and senior England caps.
The 24‑year‑old dominated the Championship last season, earning the Player of the Season award. He contributed five goals and eight assists across 38 league appearances, showcasing both creativity and work rate.
A groin injury sidelined Hackney during the final weeks of Middlesbrough’s automatic promotion chase, a period that ended with the club reaching the play‑off final at Wembley. Despite the setback, he rushed back for the final, where Middlesbrough were defeated by Hull City.
Moyes’ current midfield has been described as lacking pace and being overly static, prompting the need for a player with energy. Hackney’s ability to drive the ball forward quickly while fulfilling defensive responsibilities aligns with the manager’s desire for more dynamic play.
The deal’s structure, with its heavily incentivised add‑ons, safeguards Everton’s finances while providing the club with a high‑potential midfielder. Acquiring Hackney early also grants him a full pre‑season at Goodison Park, a factor the club views as crucial for his integration.
