Diverging visions and a shrinking remit: Ajax's director departs

🇳🇱

Ajax announced today that Marijn Beuker, the 41‑year‑old director of football, will leave the club with immediate effect after more than two and a half years in the role, ending a tenure that had already been questioned by the Amsterdam side.

Beuker took the post after being recommended by rvc‑advisor Louis van Gaal. In his capacity he was charged with shaping Ajax’s long‑term football vision.

During his tenure he was closely involved in the club’s transfer activity over the past season. Those moves formed part of the broader strategic plan he helped devise.

General director Menno Geelen explained that recent months altered Beuker’s function on certain aspects, and that discussions about the football organisation revealed a “too large difference of insight”. He added that after constructive talks both parties agreed it was better to part ways.

The appointment of technical director Jordi Cruijff further reduced Beuker’s remit. Cruijff also signalled he would assume contract responsibilities for the oldest youth teams, leaving even less for Beuker.

In a statement on the club’s website, the Arnhem‑born Beuker said he looked back with pride on his collaboration with players, parents, trainers and colleagues. He highlighted that together they built a clear vision and methodological line that provides a foundation for Ajax’s future.

Beuker’s departure follows that of Alex Kroes, making him the second board member to exit Ajax this year. The successive exits underline a period of restructuring within the club’s hierarchy.
