Barcelona pivots to boost squad as Laporta signs Issah
Barcelona president Joan Laporta announced on Saturday in New York that Ghanaian winger Abdul Aziz Issah will re‑sign for the Blaugrana after his loan from Dreams FC ended on June 30, and will train with Hansi Flick’s squad in Spain next week.
Barcelona had initially been expected not to activate the purchase option on Issah, which suggested only a limited role for the Ghanaian winger. Laporta’s announcement, however, signals a shift toward reinforcing the senior squad.
The 20‑year‑old will travel back to Spain this weekend. A flight from Ghana is scheduled to land in Barcelona on Sunday, giving him the opportunity to begin first‑team training as early as next week.
During his two‑season loan in Catalonia, Issah made 22 appearances, scored four goals and provided one assist. Laporta described that experience as valuable for the first‑team environment.
Laporta said, “I know Aziz. We brought him in for our reserve team. And now he’ll be part of the first‑team set‑up. A great lad.” The president’s remarks underline the club’s confidence in the player.
Issah’s long‑term role remains undecided, as Barcelona must decide whether he stays with the senior squad during pre‑season or returns to Barça Atlètic. A further loan could also be considered.
Barça Atlètic will begin pre‑season training on Monday, alongside academy prospects Alex Campos, Ignasi Quer, Josue Caicedo and Joan Anaya. The schedule highlights the club’s broader development plans.
