Barcelona La Masia graduate Andres Cuenca heads to Como for fresh start

Andres Cuenca, the 19‑year‑old Spanish centre‑back, has completed a permanent transfer from Barcelona to Italian side Como, ending his spell at the Catalan club after rising through the La Masia academy. The move was announced by Como as a permanent deal with no fee disclosed.

Cuenca entered Barcelona’s La Masia in 2019, arriving from the Sevilla youth academy. His arrival marked the start of a steady progression through the academy ranks, where he was seen as a promising young defender.

He logged 26 appearances for Barcelona’s reserve team, Barça Athletic, including seven matches in the first half of the last season. After renewing his contract with the Blaugrana, he moved on loan to Sporting Gijón in January to gain senior experience.

His performances earned the attention of head coach Hansi Flick, leading to a first‑team debut in October 2024 during a UEFA Champions League match against BSC Young Boys. The appearance gave him valuable exposure at the highest European level.

Internationally, the 19‑year‑old was part of the Spain squad that won the U19 European Championship this summer, adding continental success to his résumé.

Como identified Cuenca as a valuable addition to strengthen its back line, valuing his Champions League debut, regular reserve‑team action, recent loan spell at Sporting Gijón, and role in Spain’s U19 triumph as evidence of his readiness for senior football in Italy.

The agreement includes a future sell‑on clause, with Barcelona retaining a percentage of any later transfer fee. This clause ensures the Catalan club benefits from any future move.

FC Barcelona confirmed the transfer was completed and issued a statement expressing pride in Cuenca’s development before his emotional Instagram farewell, underscoring the club’s commitment to nurturing talent.
