Atherton heads to Ipswich Town from Chelsea, a boost for the academy
Ipswich Town have confirmed the signing of 17‑year‑old midfielder Chris Atherton from Premier League rivals Chelsea. The Republic of Ireland youth international moved to Stamford Bridge last summer after making 32 senior appearances for Irish Premiership side Glenavon, and is set to join the Suffolk club this season.
Atherton signed a professional contract with Chelsea in October and featured regularly in the club’s U17 and U18 squads. His performances at those levels highlighted his attacking potential.
In September 2022, while playing for the Lurgan Blues, he became the youngest senior footballer in the United Kingdom at 13 years and 329 days old. The record underscored his early exposure to senior football.
In February, it was disclosed that the academy player switched his international allegiance from Northern Ireland to the Republic of Ireland. He had previously represented Northern Ireland at Under‑16 and Under‑17 level, scoring one goal.
"I'm delighted to be here and can't wait to get started," said Chris Atherton. "I hope to offer a lot of creativity and attacking threat going forward and obviously working as hard as possible to get better every day."
"We are extremely pleased to announce the signing of Chris Atherton from Chelsea," said Ipswich's Academy Manager Ben Chenery. "Chris is an exciting attacking player we believe possesses big potential which we look forward to developing through the next stage of his career."
Ipswich Town expect Atherton to add creativity and attacking threat to their midfield as he progresses through the academy system. The club sees his development as a key part of their long‑term plans.
