Arsenal's chase for Atletico's Julian Alvarez tests their budget
Arsenal are leading the race for this Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez, and many wonder if Arteta should get him on board as the Gunners look to fill a striking void. Alvarez, 26, posted 20 goals and nine assists in 49 matches last season, and his contract runs to 2030.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, journalist Pete O’Rourke said, “I don’t think he’d be a top target for Liverpool this summer. Obviously he’s a top player, there’s no getting away from that.” He added that Arsenal appear to be the ones pushing if Alvarez returns to the Premier League, but that would be a big ask for the club.
Alvarez’s impressive numbers in the Premier League‑adjacent campaign include 20 goals and nine assists across 49 appearances for Diego Simeone’s side, placing him among the best strikers in La Liga.
His current deal at the Wanda Metropolitano expires in 2030, meaning a future move could be costly and signing him on a cheap deal later this year would be difficult for Arsenal.
The Argentine international is proficient at creating a yard of space for himself, possesses vision to craft chances, and is a good dribbler. He primarily plays as a striker but can also operate on either wing if required.
Arteta’s side would benefit from Alvarez’s ability to inject quality and depth, and his familiarity with the Premier League suggests he would settle quickly at the North London club.
At 26, Alvarez has his best years ahead, making him a suitable fit for Arsenal’s needs this summer, and the Gunners would be wise to go all out to secure him during the off‑season.
However, the financial commitment required to meet his contract terms represents a significant obstacle, and Arsenal must act swiftly if they wish to stay ahead in the race.
