Smoke from Canadian forest fires delays Lewandowski's Chicago debut
Robert Lewandowski’s much‑anticipated debut for Chicago Fire was postponed after a heavy smoke haze from Canadian forest fires swept into the city, forcing the club to delay its first competitive match after the World Cup (WK) break against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
The club had originally set the evening of Thursday to Friday for its first competitive fixture since the World Cup break, a home game versus the Vancouver Whitecaps. That encounter was to be the inaugural match after the break.
Chicago lies roughly four hundred kilometres north of the Canadian border, yet smoke from intense Canadian forest fires drifted south, degrading air quality and reaching the stadium. The haze raised safety concerns for players and spectators alike.
Chicago Fire announced on Thursday evening (Dutch time) that the match could not go ahead because of the poor air quality caused by the fires. Chairman Dave Baldwin said, “We share the disappointment of our fans, especially given the excitement around our first match after the World Cup break. While we understand this decision is disappointing, health and safety come first.”
The league has moved the Vancouver Whitecaps fixture to 6 October, meaning Lewandowski will not be able to appear for Chicago fans until at least early August. The postponement adds a few days to his waiting period.
Between the home game against Charlotte FC, the Fire have two away trips scheduled against Inter Miami and New York City. The Thursday night journey to Inter Miami could become Lewandowski’s first MLS appearance, offering a road debut before the rescheduled home match.
Lewandowski arrived in the United States this summer after completing his transfer from Barcelona, ready to begin his MLS career once conditions allow.
