Sunderland's pursuit of La Liga midfielder faces fierce competition

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Sunderland have entered the race for La Liga midfielder Ilaix Moriba, aware that they face stiff competition as the summer transfer window draws to a close. The pursuit was highlighted on March 06, 2026, from Vigo, Spain, where Moriba featured in a LaLiga EA Sports clash against Real Madrid at Estadio Abanca‑Balaidos.

Moriba, a 23‑year‑old Guinean, currently plays for RC Celta de Vigo and operates as a central midfielder. His contract with the Spanish side runs until the summer of 2029, meaning Sunderland must present a compelling offer to secure his signature.

The Black Cats are not alone in targeting the midfielder; Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and Hull City have all been linked with the player. Each of the four English clubs is expected to submit bids for the 23‑year‑old, intensifying the competition.

In the previous season, Moriba recorded two goals and four assists across 48 appearances for Celta Vigo. The Spanish club described him as one of the most talented central midfielders in La Liga.

Moriba is noted for his love of tackling, timing his challenges well and clearing his lines when required. He also possesses a powerful long‑range shot, delivers decisive passes in the final third, dribbles confidently and occasionally chips in with goals and assists.

Regis Le Bris believes Moriba could add quality to Sunderland’s frontline and compete for a regular first‑team place at the Stadium of Light next season. The coach sees the Guinean as a good option for the Wearside club as he continues to develop.

Because his contract does not expire until 2029, Sunderland must outbid the other interested clubs before the window closes. The club’s ability to present a convincing financial package will be decisive.

If the Black Cats succeed, Moriba would provide a fresh boost to Sunderland’s Premier League ambitions. His arrival could enhance the squad’s depth and quality ahead of the upcoming season.
