Rooney warns FA: Only Pep Guardiola could replace Tuchel at England

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·
Former England captain Wayne Rooney says Thomas Tuchel should stay as England manager unless the Football Association can bring in Pep Guardiola, after England’s 2‑1 semi‑final loss to Argentina that ended their chance of a second men’s World Cup final. Tuchel’s position has been widely criticised for his decision‑making in Wednesday’s 2‑1 loss, a retreat that reminded many of the familiar patterns seen under Sir Gareth Southgate on big occasions. An inquest is under way after England spurned the chance to reach a second ever men’s World Cup final, with their semi‑final collapse against rivals Argentina. The PA Wire reports that the Press Association understands Tuchel retains backing of key figures at the FA, which granted him a contract extension until 2028 in February. Rooney told the Wayne Rooney Show, “I don’t see anyone else out there at the minute, unless you go and get Pep Guardiola.” He added, “If Pep is available, then maybe you go and get him. I think he is a top‑class manager, and the best managers learn from mistakes and improve.” Rooney also warned that Tuchel lacks World Cup experience, comparing the situation to former Italy coach Fabio Capello, and questioned who could replace him if sacked. The juxtaposition shows that, despite criticism, the FA’s backing and Tuchel’s contract mean he stays in charge unless Pep Guardiola becomes available.
