Paul Scholes backs Tielemans as United’s midfield boost, warns of gaps
Youri Tielemans has completed his transfer to Manchester United for just over €40 million, a move that immediately earned praise from club legend Paul Scholes. The Belgian midfielder, known for his Premier League experience, joins the Red Devils as they look to strengthen their midfield ahead of the Champions League.
Paul Scholes is convinced the Belgian will become an important reinforcement for the English top club. "Youri Tielemans is an excellent addition for Manchester United," he said.
Scholes highlighted Tielemans’ extensive Premier League background, noting he has played at the highest level for many years. "He is calm on the ball, technically excellent, sets the tempo and brings a lot of quality to the midfield," the former midfielder added.

Despite the praise, Scholes warned that United still need extra reinforcement on the ball‑winning side of the park. He explained, "I don’t see Tielemans playing a full season next to Kobbie Mainoo. They need a midfielder with physical strength and athletic ability, someone who wins duels and protects the defence. With the Champions League approaching you need different profiles in midfield." Former right‑back Gary Neville echoed Scholes’ concerns, saying the competition must stay on guard. "Because they are worried, everyone is worried," Neville concluded. Neville also pointed out that Aston Villa never wanted to sell Tielemans and that his contract forced a departure. He added, "Without that buyout clause of €41 million United would have negotiated all summer. Villa would have raised the price all summer." The €40 million signing gives Manchester United a technically gifted midfielder, but both Scholes and Neville stress that United must still address the need for a more physical presence if they are to compete on multiple fronts.
