Leeds chase World Cup star: why Zetterström is the Elland Road answer

Leeds United have opened formal contact with Derby County over Jacob Widell Zetterström after the 27-year-old’s World Cup performances catapulted him into the Premier League spotlight. The Elland Road side need a commanding presence between the posts after Ilan Meslier’s departure left a first-team void that cannot be filled by internal options.

Zetterström has become one of the hottest properties in European football following Sweden’s 1–1 draw with Japan, a result that secured their place in the Round of 16 and showcased his shot-stopping and aerial dominance. The Derby County goalkeeper kept seven clean sheets in 33 appearances across all competitions during the 2025/26 Championship season, underlining his reliability at club level.

Fabrizio Romano has publicly confirmed the growing interest in Zetterström, while Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolverhampton Wanderers have also entered the race for the Scandinavian shot-stopper. Leeds’ formal approach signals their intent to move quickly before Sweden’s next knockout-stage fixture potentially inflates his market value further.

Daniel Farke’s recruitment team face a stark choice: gamble on academy products or veterans, or invest in a proven Championship performer entering his prime. At 1.97 metres, Zetterström offers the physical presence Farke demands, but the German manager also requires a goalkeeper comfortable with ball-playing under pressure.

Derby County are expected to resist any approach, aware that multiple top-flight clubs now view Zetterström as a priority target. A structured bid in the region of £6 million has been mooted as the figure likely to break the Rams’ resistance, reflecting both his age and the scarcity of goalkeepers of his profile.

The Swede’s right-footedness, bravery in sweeping up, and precise distribution metrics align with Farke’s tactical blueprint, making him more than just a reactive shot-stopper. His ability to command the box and deal with aerial threats adds another dimension to Leeds’ defensive structure.

Time is not on Leeds’ side. With Sweden’s World Cup campaign still alive, every match increases Zetterström’s marketability, and clubs are prepared to escalate their offers accordingly. Delaying risks pricing the Elland Road side out of contention entirely.

A failure to secure Zetterström would force Farke to revisit alternative options, whether through the transfer market or academy pathways, but the club’s hierarchy have made it clear that a high-profile goalkeeper is now a priority.
