Craig Gordon’s ‘incredible’ comeback to his final World Cup

[Getty Images] Former Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon, who suffered a double leg break at 39, has recovered to reach this summer’s World Cup finals, a comeback described as “incredible” by ex‑striker Rory Loy, and he announced his retirement on Thursday.

Gordon’s club career included spells at Celtic, Hearts and Sunderland before the injury. He broke both shin bones at 39 and spent months in intensive rehabilitation.

Ex‑striker Rory Loy suffered the identical double leg break earlier in his career. He recovered after undergoing surgery at ages 20 and 23, showing the injury can be survived at a younger stage.

“I did the same thing, but I did it when I was 20, 23,” Loy said, noting the contrast in mindset between a 20‑year‑old and a player in his late 30s. He highlighted that age influences both mental approach and physical recovery.

Loy added that younger bodies are more motivated and physically resilient. He argued that this physiological edge aids faster rehabilitation.

He explained that a snapped shin bone requires the bone to heal and then forces a complete overhaul of biomechanics, from walking to moving on the pitch. The process affects every movement, from basic gait to sprinting during matches.

Loy said he needed orthotics in his shoes to adapt to the altered movement patterns. The custom insoles helped him regain stability after the injury.

Despite the physical hurdles, Loy praised Gordon’s performance, saying the goalkeeper’s level of saves was incredible. He described the saves as a benchmark of excellence after such adversity.

Loy concluded that Gordon’s determination summed up the mindset required to return from such a severe injury. His comments underscored the mental fortitude needed to overcome major setbacks.

Loy made the remark on the BBC’s Scottish Football Podcast, reinforcing the significance of Gordon’s achievement.
