Chelsea's gamble: Penders likened to Courtois as Genk prodigy

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Mike Penders, the 20‑year‑old Belgian goalkeeper from Limbourgeois, is set to join Chelsea this summer and will have to prove himself alongside Robert Sánchez. The move has reignited comparisons with Thibaut Courtois, whose own journey began at Genk before he became Real Madrid’s No 1 and a Red Devils stalwart.

In Belgium, many believe Penders possesses the talent to become one of the world’s elite keepers. His career trajectory mirrors Courtois: both left Genk at a very young age to sign for Chelsea, and both later earned places with the Belgian national side.

Chelsea paid £17 million for Penders when he had not yet featured for Genk’s first team. Gilbert Roex, the former goalkeeper coach at Genk, said the amount surprised many observers.

"Honestly, we thought it was a completely crazy sum for a keeper who hadn’t played with the first team," Roex told. "But Chelsea had been watching him for years. Like with Courtois, they saw his potential."

Last season, Penders spent a loan spell at Strasbourg, where he established himself as the starting goalkeeper. His performances earned him a call‑up to the Belgian squad for the World Cup, where he trained alongside Courtois throughout the tournament.

Beyond his shot‑stopping, Penders’ personality and professionalism have been praised as essential traits for reaching the highest level.

When he arrived at Genk at age 13, his footwork was weak, Roex recalled. "He was very tall and struggled with coordination, but I have rarely seen a player improve so spectacularly between 13 and 18."

Roex attributes that evolution to an exceptional mentality. "He worked incredibly hard every day, never felt pressure, reads the game well and knows exactly when to come out or play with his feet. That makes him special."

The coach sees strong similarities with Courtois, noting Genk has produced several good keepers such as Koen Casteels, Nordin Jackers and Martin Van der Voordt. "Mike, however, has the potential to reach the same level as Thibaut. His calm spreads to the whole team and, for a goalkeeper, that is worth gold."

Chelsea currently relies on Robert Sánchez as the number‑one keeper, but behind the scenes Penders is being prepared for a more prominent role.
