Bowen's vow to lead West Ham Championship comeback sparks debate

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

On 17 July 2026, 29‑year‑old captain Jarrod Bowen announced he will stay with the Hammers despite their relegation, pledging to help West Ham United return to the Premier League as the club embarks on a West Ham Championship campaign upcoming.

Bowen said a meeting in Prague with new majority shareholder Daniel Kretinsky and associate Jiri Svarc reinforced his decision. “The ambition that I got from them in terms of the direction the club wants to move in interested me a lot,” he explained.

He added that his choice underscores a personal ambition to restore the club’s top‑flight status, stating his primary motivation is to see West Ham United back in the Premier League where he believes it belongs.

In the previous Premier League campaign, Bowen recorded 11 goals and 12 assists, marking his fifth consecutive season with double‑digit goal contributions. He believes his experience will be vital in the lower division.

His career totals now stand at 280 appearances, 85 goals and 63 assists for the Hammers, and he famously scored the winner in West Ham’s 2023 Conference League triumph over Fiorentina, delivering the club’s first trophy in 43 years.

Internationally, Bowen has earned 22 caps for England but was omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the summer World Cup. Reflecting on the exclusion, he said, “It hurt everyone and it should hurt everyone. It was such a disappointing thing but it doesn’t last forever.”

When West Ham’s fate was sealed on the final day of the Premier League season, Bowen was expected to join a raft of departures, including Mateus Fernandes who moved to Tottenham for £85 million and Crysencio Summerville who was widely tipped to leave, yet he chose to remain.

West Ham begin their Championship campaign against Burnley on 16 August, with Bowen aiming to lead the side back to the Premier League as soon as possible.
