Liverpool’s £12.5m gamble on Chiesa faces summer test

Federico Chiesa, the Italy international, joined Liverpool from Juventus in 2024 for a reported £12.5 million. Two years later, the Premier League champions have told the winger he should seek a new club this summer, valuing him between £10 million and £15 million.

Liverpool originally signed Chiesa as an opportunistic bargain, believing his quality outweighed the modest fee. The club expected a player capable of delivering greater value than the £12.5 million outlay.

Recurring injury problems have restricted Chiesa’s availability since his arrival. Consequently, he has spent most of his Liverpool career on the fringes, competing with a deep pool of attacking options.

The appointment of Andoni Iraola as head coach adds another layer to Chiesa’s situation. Liverpool’s continued pursuit of younger wide forwards further narrows the pathway for the Italian winger.

TEAMtalk Liverpool have effectively opened the door for Chiesa to leave, setting an asking price of £10‑15 million. The relatively low valuation reflects the club’s willingness to accept a modest return on their initial investment.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano said on his YouTube channel, “There are many questions regarding the name of Federico Chiesa … the decision made by the Liverpool player is to participate in the preseason – to get together with the new coach Andoni Iraola.” Speaking to dello Sport, Chiesa added, “I’ve played very little since the start of 2026… the club and Slot told me I couldn’t leave, I want to play, I’ll go on a training camp in the US, then I’ll talk to the club and the new manager, Iraola, and we’ll see.”

If Chiesa impresses in pre‑season, Iraola may retain him, while strong performances could revive interest from Juventus, Inter, Napoli and Roma. Either way, Liverpool can afford patience, and Chiesa’s priority remains regular playing time.
