Milan’s record‑breaking spend signals Amorim’s new era

AC Milan have reached an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain to sign 25‑year‑old Portugal striker Goncalo Ramos in a club‑record deal, the most expensive transfer in the Rossoneri’s history. The fee also tops Serie A’s transfers since Inter paid Romelu Lukaku €74 million for Manchester United in 2019, surpassing the previous Milan record set by Rafael Leao from Lille. The signing underlines the ambitions of newly appointed head coach Ruben Amorim, who arrived from Portugal earlier this summer. Amorim, familiar with Ramos from their time in the Portuguese league, identified the striker as his preferred option to lead Milan’s attack. Milan faced competition from several leading European clubs but ultimately secured Ramos’ signature. A strong working relationship between owner Gerry Cardinale and PSG president Nasser Al‑Khelaifi is understood to have facilitated the negotiations. Ramos completed his medical examination while on international duty at the World Cup in the United States. Portugal are preparing for their final group‑stage match against Colombia, with Ramos remaining in Roberto Martinez’s squad. He has so far made one appearance at the tournament, coming off the bench in the opening draw with DR Congo. Ramos departs Paris Saint-Germain after an eventful spell in the French capital. Despite stiff competition for places, he became an important squad member and contributed crucial goals in both domestic and European competitions. Earlier on Friday Milan confirmed the appointment of Massimo Calvelli as the club’s new chief executive as part of a wider restructuring. The arrival of Ramos, set to join the squad at the San Siro, is expected to be the first marquee signing of Amorim’s reign. Milan believe the Portugal international can spearhead their challenge for the Serie A title and a strong showing in the UEFA Champions League.
