Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa erupted in anger after his side’s 0‑1 defeat to Spain in the World Cup first round, shouting at a television technician and giving a black look before a silent press conference. The Argentine, nicknamed “El Loco”, blamed the loss on a lack of attacking presence. Bielsa’s outburst began when a TV technician failed to keep pace with his rapid speech, prompting the coach to launch a verbal tirade and stare coldly at the camera. He remained mute during the subsequent press conference, refusing to answer questions. “Je n'ai pas réussi à tirer parti du potentiel de l'Uruguay et de ses joueurs”, Bielsa said, adding that the team lacked “plus de présence en attaque”. He emphasized that the squad possessed quality players but failed to translate that into results. When asked what he told goalkeeper Fernando Muslera at halftime, Bielsa replied simply, “Rien”. He clarified that Muslera himself had requested to be substituted. He dismissed the significance of the team’s previous fourth‑place qualification finish and third‑place Copa América result. “Nous avons joué pour obtenir 7 points et nous en avons obtenu deux”, Bielsa admitted, noting that Uruguay earned only two points from a possible seven. He described the squad as having quality, effort and dedication despite the disappointing outcome. Bielsa noted that this is his third World Cup campaign as head coach, joining the 2002 Argentina side eliminated in the first round and the 2010 Chile team that passed the opening stage before exiting in the round of 16. He reflected on the parallel between his early exit with Argentina and the current disappointment with Uruguay.
