Olivier Renard set for Al-Shabab sporting director job

Four months after leaving his post as sporting director of RSC Anderlecht, 47‑year‑old Belgian Olivier Renard is reported to be in pole position for the sporting director role at Saudi Arabian club Al‑Shabab FC, which finished thirteenth in the Saudi Pro League after a difficult season.

Renard left RSC Anderlecht four months ago after joining the club at the end of 2024. His departure left a short silence around his next move, but sources indicated he remained highly regarded internationally.

Earlier in his career, Renard served as sporting director of the Canadian MLS side Montreal Impact. That stint gave him experience operating in an international football environment.

Al‑Shabab FC, a six‑time Saudi national champion, endured a difficult campaign and finished thirteenth in the Saudi Pro League. The club aims to re‑establish its position among the league’s elite.

Club officials have identified Renard as the candidate who can steer the project back to the top. They view his background as fitting the ambition to reconnect with the league’s upper echelon.

Among Al‑Shabab’s current Belgian contingent, winger Yannick Carrasco recently extended his contract, and former Anderlecht defender Wesley Hoedt is also on the roster. Their presence could provide familiar contacts for Renard.

The Saudi competition continues to draw foreign investment, increasing the strategic importance of the sporting director role. For Renard, the appointment offers a chance to rebuild his reputation after a disappointing spell at Anderlecht.
