Courtois urges Belgium to win group to avoid long travel
Finishing first in group G is vital for the Belgium national team, known as the Diables Rouges, because it spares them long journeys and keeps the round‑of‑16 and quarter‑final matches in Seattle. A top‑place also reduces travel for families and avoids the extensive trips experienced in Russia 2018.
Belgium enters group G as the clear favorite, but Egypt presents a surprising challenge that could earn a point against the Diables Rouges. To secure first place, Belgium must defeat Iran and New Zealand and aim to score many goals to stay ahead of Egypt.
Courtois explained that a first‑place finish would keep the team in Seattle for both the round of 16 and the quarter‑final, making a return to Vancouver after the match much more convenient. He contrasted this with a second‑place finish that would send the squad to Dallas and Kansas City, requiring constant packing.
"If we are in the round of 16 and quarter‑final here, we can return to our quarters after Vancouver. It is more practical than traveling. If we are second, we go to Dallas, to Kansas City… you have to unpack your suitcases all the time," Courtois said, adding, "It is also better for our families."
Courtois recalled the 2018 Russian campaign, noting the long trips from Kazan to Moscow and from Moscow to Saint Petersburg, and said avoiding such journeys would be beneficial.
He concluded that the objective is to win the Sunday match against Iran with as many goals as possible. The Belgium versus Iran game is scheduled for 21:00 on 21 June, broadcast on Walfoot.be.
