Brobbey says Dutch squad rallies around Gakpo after tragedy

Brian Brobbey told that the Netherlands squad is rallying around striker Cody Gakpo after the heartbreaking loss of his unborn son, Elijah Raphael Gakpo, who died during pregnancy, emphasizing the team's collective support within the camp. Brobbey said, “Everyone naturally feels with him. We already knew a few days earlier.” He added, “We try to be there for him, whether he needs us or needs space.” Brobbey noted, “I notice we are a close group. The coaches, the players, everyone tries to be there for him.” He concluded, “It is nice that he stays with us. Cody is obviously an important player for us.” Noa van der Bij posted the announcement on Instagram, writing: “With broken hearts we share the heartbreaking news that our son died during pregnancy. Thank you for the support. Elijah Raphael Gakpo. Forever loved. Forever our son.” The post expressed gratitude for the outpouring of sympathy. Cody Gakpo responded on Instagram, stating, “This is an incredibly difficult time for our family. We hope everyone respects our privacy. Thank you for your understanding.” He asked the public to respect their privacy during the mourning period. On Saturday it was confirmed that Gakpo, in agreement with his girlfriend Noa van der Bij, will remain with the Netherlands squad for the World Cup. The decision underscores the team's commitment to supporting him through the personal tragedy. The Dutch side will continue to stand by Gakpo as they prepare for the tournament. Their unity aims to preserve focus amid the emotional challenge.
