Weghorst lifts FC Twente debut in lively Gent friendly
FC Twente’s new striker Wout Weghorst opened his unofficial debut with a goal in the club’s friendly against KAA Gent in Delden, and later his replacement Lucas Vennegoor of Hesselink also scored, securing a 2-2 draw. The match featured a lively contest with both sides creating chances.
The friendly took place in Delden and ended 2-2. Weghorst was the early scorer for the Enschedeërs, finding the net shortly after the kickoff.
Twente suffered a false start, falling behind after two minutes. Newcomer Aske Adelgaard made an early error, followed by Max Bruns failing to clear a cross, allowing Gent to lead 0-1.
Weghorst needed only a few minutes to restore parity. After a good move by Ruud Nijstad, the former Ajax forward arrived at the near post and tapped in to make it 1-1.
Twente then dominated possession. About half an hour in, Weghorst attempted his second, heading a Bart van Rooij cross just wide of the target.
Shortly before the break, a neat combination between Daan Rots and Weghorst created another chance, but the Gent goalkeeper denied a second goal.
In the second half, Gent retook the lead when Wilfried Kanga headed in a right‑wing cross, his second of the afternoon.
After an hour, Weghorst was substituted amid applause for Lucas Vennegoor of Hesselink, who later scored from eleven metres to level the game at 2-2, the final score.
