Midfield rebuild at risk as United’s Ugarte injury looms
Manchester United are confronting a fresh setback as midfielder Manuel Ugarte sustained a knee injury while representing Uruguay, casting doubt on the club’s immediate midfield options. The injury arrives as United seek to replace departing star Casemiro and solidify a midfield that has struggled for consistency since his exit.
Ugarte twisted his left knee and was carried off on a stretcher in Guadalajara after Uruguay fell 1‑0 to Spain. He was substituted by Nicolas de la Cruz, and his visible distress heightened concerns about possible ligament damage, as the 1‑0 loss also ended Marcelo Bielsa’s tournament.
Manchester United posted an update on its official website, confirming the midfielder left the pitch in distress shortly before half‑time. The club added that the extent of the injury is yet to be determined and wished Ugarte a speedy recovery.
Ugarte arrived from Paris Saint‑Germain two years ago in a deal reported to be worth up to £50.5 million. He managed only ten starts last season as manager Ruben Amorim favoured Bruno Fernandes alongside Casemiro in central midfield, while Michael Carrick restored Kobbie Mainoo to a more prominent role. Following Casemiro’s free‑transfer departure, United have already secured Ederson from Atalanta for £39 million and are negotiating for Mateus Fernandes, valued between £80 million and £85 million, with West Ham and Tottenham also in the mix.
Should Ugarte require an extended spell on the sidelines, prospective buyers are expected to postpone interest until his fitness is confirmed. This would remove a potential source of transfer income at a time United aim to strengthen multiple areas of the squad. Consequently, the club may need to reassess its ambition to add another central midfielder and could shift focus toward wide attackers and a new goalkeeper.
Because the injury occurred on international duty, United are eligible for compensation through FIFA’s Club Protection Programme. The scheme can reimburse clubs up to £120,000 per week for a player’s salary during qualifying absences.
United now await further medical scans to establish Ugarte’s recovery timeline. The outcome will shape the club’s transfer strategy and determine whether additional midfield signings remain a priority.
