Joan Capdevila begs Trump for US entry before Spain‑Argentina final

By 4All Football Editorial ·
Former Spain defender Joan Capdevila publicly appealed to President Donald Trump on Friday, pleading for help to enter the United States for the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina on Sunday after his ESTA application was rejected because of a past visit to Iran. The request underscores his desire to be present at the match despite the visa‑waiver setback. Capdevila, a 48‑year‑old, was a key figure in Spain's golden era, starting in the 2010 World Cup final against the Netherlands and also part of the squad that won the 2008 European Championship; he helped Spain secure their only men's World Cup title in 2010 (AP Photo/Armando Franca). His former status as a national hero adds weight to his appeal. His Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) application was denied because US State Department rules bar travellers who have been to Iran after 1 March 2011 from using the visa‑waiver programme, requiring a full visa instead. The State’s policy on the Electronic System for Travel Authorization is clear, and the denial reflects those regulations. The complication stems from an exhibition match ten years ago when he played for a Spanish La Liga legends side against Iranian all‑stars in Tehran, a trip that now triggers the Iran‑related restriction in the ESTA system. He posted on X on Friday night, writing "I NEED HELP @realDonaldTrump!", and also sent a separate message to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio while tagging Spain's ministry of sport. The tweet highlights his urgent call for assistance. Capdevila said he wants to be at the game in New Jersey "with all my 2010 teammates" to support the current Spain squad, underscoring his personal connection to the event and his wish to join the Spain‑Argentina final in the US. The US Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the ESTA programme, has been approached for comment on the situation but has not responded, leaving the former defender's request unresolved.
