Feyenoord heads to training camp with injury‑hit squad
Feyenoord defeated Charleroi on Friday afternoon, but the victory came without six regulars – Jordan Bos, Gijs Smal, Thomas Beelen, Bart Nieuwkoop, Jakub Moder and Leo Sauer – as the Dutch side prepares for next week’s training camp. Coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst said only Sauer could join the camp, while the others would stay behind.
Vandaag, the club posted an update at 17:39 noting the win. The triumph followed earlier victories over FC Dordrecht and Club Brugge, completing a short run of successes for the Rotterdammers.
The six absentees were listed by name, and the coach elaborated: “Alleen Leo kan mee op trainingskamp. Hij sluit dan aan bij de groep, al is dat nog niet voluit. Grote delen kan hij meedoen. De rest van de spelers die niet kunnen trainen, zal hier achterblijven,” he told Feyenoord ONE. In English, he explained that only Sauer could attend, while the rest would remain behind.
Jordan Bos remains sidelined after a injury sustained while representing Australia at the WK, extending his absence. The other five missing players may also need to watch for an undetermined period.
Feyenoord will open the new Eredivisie season on 9 August with an away fixture at Het Kasteel, marking the first competitive match after the training camp.
Goalkeeper Liam Bossin kept a clean sheet against Charleroi, wearing the captain’s armband in the absence of new signing Tjark Ernst. Bossin told , “That makes me proud, but I have not done anything for the club to deserve this. When I signed, I knew my role. Timon (Wellenreuther) is now gone and Tjark arrives. I will help him become important for us. I have not heard about my role, so I will just do my best.”
The coach’s comments and Bossin’s remarks underline the challenges Feyenoord faces as it heads into the training camp with a reduced squad, while still aiming to build momentum for the upcoming season.
