Christian Fuchs departs Newport County after seven‑month stint
Christian Fuchs has resigned as manager of League Two side Newport County after just seven months, choosing to step away on the eve of pre‑season as the Exiles prepare for a Carabao Cup tie against AFC Wimbledon and a league opener versus Rochdale.
The 40‑year‑old former Austria defender earned 78 international caps. He also lifted a Premier League title with Leicester City.
Fuchs arrived at Newport County in November, taking over from sacked manager David Hughes. His appointment marked the club’s third managerial change in a short period.
In his first season, Fuchs guided the Exiles to safety, securing their Football League status on the final day. The survival bid ended a relegation threat that had loomed over the club.
On the cusp of pre‑season, Fuchs announced his departure, leaving Newport County searching for a fourth manager in just over two years. The club now faces the task of appointing a new boss before the upcoming fixtures.
The club released a statement: “Newport County can confirm that Christian Fuchs has made the decision to step away from his role as manager.” It added, “Everyone at Newport County would like to thank Christian for his hard work, commitment and professionalism, and wish him every success for the future.”
Newport County’s schedule begins with a Carabao Cup match against AFC Wimbledon on the weekend of 8 August. Their League Two campaign starts a week later with a home game versus Rochdale on 15 August, under a new manager after the exits of Nelson Jardim and David Hughes.
