Birmingham City’s new defensive boost: France’s Marie Levasseur arrives

🇬🇧 By 4All Football Editorial ·

France’s Marie Levasseur, 29, has signed for Birmingham City in the Women’s Super League after 63 appearances for Montpellier over three seasons in France. The Canada international defender joins the club as it builds a new project ahead of the upcoming season.

Levasseur arrives from French Ligue 1 side Montpellier, where she featured in 63 matches across three campaigns. Her time in France was spent entirely in the top division, underscoring her experience at a high level.

Her French tenure also included spells at FC Fleury and Metz before a stint with Finnish side ONS Oulu. The Finnish club gave her exposure to a different football culture, adding to her diverse résumé.

Before moving to Europe, Levasseur represented the University of Memphis in the United States. Her college career in Memphis laid the foundation for her professional journey across continents.

Speaking about the move, Levasseur said, “I’ve always wanted to play in the WSL. I think it’s one of the best leagues nowadays on the women’s side.” She added that the club’s project and identity resonated with her after discussions with the coach and staff.

Levasseur has earned 18 caps for Canada, progressing through the nation’s youth teams before making her senior debut in 2015. Her international pedigree adds valuable experience to Birmingham’s defensive line.

The defender becomes Birmingham City’s fourth addition this week, following the arrivals of Jade Rastocle, Millie Turner and Lisa Naalsund. Manager Amy Merricks praised Levasseur, stating, “Marie's mentality really stood out throughout the recruitment process. She wanted to challenge herself, believed in what we’re building and fits the identity we’re shaping.”
