Barcelona’s €16m hurdle stalls Salinas as Racing holds firm

🇪🇸 By 4All Football Editorial ·
Barcelona have set their sights on 19‑year‑old Jorge Salinas, with the La Liga side facing a €16 million release clause that Racing Santander refuse to lower. The left‑footed defender, fresh from Spain’s U19 European Championship triumph, remains a coveted target as Racing hold firm. Barcelona’s promotion of numerous academy graduates for the upcoming La Liga season has left the left side of their defence understaffed, prompting the club to prioritise signing a left‑footed, versatile defender to balance the youthful back line. The Catalan giants identified a clear need for such a player as they reshape a youthful squad for the campaign. Salinas can operate as a traditional left‑back or as a left‑sided centre‑back, offering tactical flexibility for the first team. He helped Spain win the U19 European Championship, underscoring his experience at international youth level. Head coach Hansi Flick has given his personal approval for Salinas to join the senior squad directly. Flick’s endorsement signals that the player will be integrated without an interim loan. Racing Santander, newly promoted to La Liga, are insisting on the full €16 million release clause to release Salinas, according to reports. Barcelona contend the defender’s market value is far below that figure, creating a wide valuation gap. Barcelona originally believed the clause to be €8 million, a figure that applied while Racing were still in the Segunda División before 30 June. Upon promotion, the clause automatically doubled to €16 million under the clubs’ agreement. Negotiations have stalled after Racing refused to lower their asking price, while Atletico Madrid continue to monitor the situation. Salinas has expressed a preference for a move to Barcelona if a deal materialises, and talks could intensify once he returns for pre‑season after his U19 Euro success with Spain. Agent Jorge Mendes is liaising with Barcelona to craft a compromise, including the possibility of adding academy players to reduce the fee. Racing have indicated they might consider such a package as they reinforce their squad for life in La Liga. Barcelona maintain that €8 million reflects a fair valuation and view €16 million as a financial risk for a player yet to debut in the top flight. If negotiations collapse, the club hopes to revisit the move after Salinas’s summer break, while Racing remain firm on their price.
