Ajax’s €20m gamble: why Marcos Leonardo is their new strike force

🇳🇱 By 4All Football Editorial ·
Ajax have completed the signing of 23‑year‑old Brazilian striker Marcos Leonardo from Al Hilal for just under €20 million, with the player signing a contract that runs until mid‑2031 at the Johan Cruijff Arena, the club announced officially on Friday through its channels. The Ajax board described Leonardo as a huge outside chance and acted at the right moment, while the technical director was keen to bring in a new first‑striker to replace departing forwards. Al Hilal agreed to the transfer because they already have Karim Benzema and Darwin Núñez on their books, and Núñez had been unable to play for the past half‑year after the club reached its limit on foreign players. Leonardo arrives after two years in Saudi Arabia where he featured in 82 matches for Al Hilal, scoring 48 goals and providing five assists. The Saudis had paid €40 million to Benfica two seasons earlier to release him from his contract. His departure opens up minutes for Núñez at Al Hilal, and Ajax expect the 1.77 m right‑footed striker to become a fixed attacking option for the Amsterdammers. Jordi Cruijff has already said goodbye to Wout Weghorst, and Kasper Dolberg may also leave, making Leonardo the third summer addition after Caio Henrique and Daley Blind.
