Ugarte's World Cup injury throws United's midfield plans into doubt
Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte, 25, suffered a knee ligament injury while representing Uruguay in the World Cup group‑stage match against Spain in Guadalajara on Friday. The Uruguay medical team assessed him on Saturday before he travelled to Manchester for further examinations, leaving United to determine the appropriate treatment.
Ugarte twisted awkwardly while attempting a tackle in the build‑up to Spain’s winning goal and was carried off the pitch on a stretcher. He later described the episode as “the most serious injury a footballer can face” in an Instagram post.
Manchester United confirmed the injury, stating that assessment of the knee ligament damage is ongoing to decide the best course of treatment and rehabilitation timescale. The club added that everyone wishes Ugarte a successful recovery and that they will support him every step of the way.
In his Instagram caption, Ugarte wrote that the incident will stay with him for the rest of his life and that “hitting rock bottom will make me stronger”. He pledged to return stronger, saying success in life is about starting again every time you fall.
Ugarte arrived at Manchester United from Paris Saint‑Germain in 2024 for a reported £50.8 million fee, but his impact has been limited. His last appearance for the club was the Premier League defeat to Leeds United on 13 April, and summer transfer speculation suggested a possible move on loan or permanently.
United have already agreed a £35 million deal for Atalanta goalkeeper Ederson, but his medical was postponed after he received a late call‑up to Brazil’s World Cup squad. The club had also pursued 26‑year‑old Elliot Anderson, but withdrew after the high transfer fee and wages required to sign him from Nottingham Forest became prohibitive. Negotiations with West Ham for Portugal international Mateus Fernandes have stalled over fee disagreements, while Tottenham also compete for the former Southampton midfielder, and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott remains on United’s radar.
Brighton previously turned down United’s bid for Cameroon international Carlos Baleba, adding another potential target to the list. The extent of Ugarte’s injury could influence United’s available budget for these midfield acquisitions, though the club has not commented on financial implications.
