The €33m miss: why Real Madrid’s 2020 pursuit of Ferran Torres mattered

🇬🇧

Real Madrid’s 2020 bid for Ferran Torres collapsed after Barcelona secured the forward for a fee close to €33 million, a move that would have triggered his €8 million release clause but was blocked by Valencia’s earlier contract terms. The Spanish striker, who later joined Manchester City before returning to Barcelona in 2022, remained a coveted talent for the capital club.

Ferran Torres finished last season’s La Liga as the highest‑scoring Spanish player, earned a call‑up for the ongoing FIFA World Cup under Luis de la Fuente, and is regularly used as an impact substitute if not a starter.

Despite his goal tally, Torres’s inconsistency has been noted; he can be a prolific scorer on his day but appears frustratingly ineffective on off days.

Real Madrid’s interest persisted, with Hansi Flick’s dynamics at Barcelona listing him among the top pieces, and an AS report highlighted the possibility of a Real Madrid signing.

Torres grew up in the Valencia circuit, his market value spiking after Spain’s U‑17 World Cup runners‑up finish in India; both Barcelona and Real Madrid tracked him then, and he held an €8 million clause that would have allowed a move.

Valencia gave him a first‑team debut and subsequently raised the clause, effectively prohibiting a transfer to Real Madrid. He later shone at the U19 Euros and left for Manchester City in 2020 for a fee close to €33 million.

Barcelona signed Torres from Manchester City in 2022, despite Real Madrid’s continued interest; the player chose England at the time. In January 2022 he returned to Spain, signing for Barcelona, arch‑rivals of Los Blancos.

Six years on, Real Madrid have built a formidable attacking partnership of Vinicius Jr and Kylian Mbappé, while Torres has struggled to become a regular starter for Barcelona, battling for minutes against 37‑year‑old Robert Lewandowski until last season.

The missed €33 million signing illustrates how top clubs adapt their transfer strategies, with Real Madrid reinforcing elsewhere and Barcelona continuing to gamble on young talent.
