How close Robert Lewandowski came to swapping Bayern for Real Madrid

Former agent Cezary Kucharski disclosed that Robert Lewandowski was on the brink of signing for Real Madrid in early 2014, just weeks before his move from Borussia Dortmund to Bayern Munich was confirmed, with the Spanish giants offering terms reportedly 20 % better.

Kucharski said: “Yes, Robert was close to signing a contract with Real Madrid. There were two or three weeks left before his transfer to Bayern Munich from Borussia Dortmund was announced. Basically, he wanted to terminate his contract with Bayern and go to Real Madrid. The conditions there were 20% better.” The quote confirms the narrow window before the Bayern deal became public.

He later explained his counsel, noting that staying at Bayern gave Lewandowski a clearer path to stardom. “This determined that he became the main star at Bayern and a substitute at Real Madrid. Those around him put a lot of pressure on him to leave. I thought it was important to keep my word. It is better to be number one at Bayern than number 11 or 12 at Real Madrid.”

Kucharski added that Real Madrid kept in touch annually. He recalled: “Basically, every year Real Madrid asked me what was happening, what the situation was with Robert.” This shows the club’s persistent interest despite the failed transfer.

In the winter of 2018, Kucharski was in Madrid speaking with Florentino Perez’s right‑hand man. He said: “Ten days before our separation was publicly announced, I was in Madrid. It was the winter of 2018 and I was speaking with Florentino Perez’s right‑hand man. He told me that if I opened the door to Bayern, they would want to make a serious offer.” The discussion highlights a later attempt to revive the move.

Lewandowski ultimately joined Barcelona, where he scored goals, won titles, and closed his Camp Nou chapter before moving towards a new stage in MLS. The missed Real Madrid deal remains a notable footnote in his career.
