Champions League allure drives Club Brugge to sign veteran Sommer

🇧🇪 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Club Brugge have officially presented 37‑year‑old goalkeeper Yann Sommer, the former FC Basel, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayern München and Internazionale stopper, as the Belgian (Belgische) champions prepare for another Champions League campaign. The Swiss (Zwitser) veteran signed a contract running to the summer of 2029.

Sommer’s résumé includes spells at FC Basel, where he began his senior career, a stint with Borussia Mönchengladbach in the German Bundesliga, and later periods at Bayern München and Internazionale in Italy’s Serie A. His experience across Switzerland, Germany and Italy equips him with a broad tactical understanding.

Sommer said, “The fans of Club Brugge gave extra energy, which is wonderful, but ultimately it is about the titles.” He added, “I am happy to be here and look forward to starting with the team and staff.”

Club Brugge, as the reigning Belgian champions, will again feature in the Champions League group stage. The club’s supporters impressed the Swiss goalkeeper during his first look at the competition.

Other goalkeepers at Club Brugge told Sommer they felt his physical condition resembled that of a 20‑year‑old. Sommer replied, “That is nice to hear, I am glad to be here.”

Sommer’s new deal runs until the summer of 2029. He has already amassed 798 official appearances, keeping a clean sheet 271 times.
