Celtic star heavily linked: Why Glasgow Giants should let him leave

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Al‑Nassr’s hunt for a new central midfielder intensifies as Ange Postecoglou eyes a €2 million Celtic star, heavily linked with a Saudi move, and Glasgow Giants should let him leave. The club needs a replacement for the departing Marcelo Brozovic, and the midfielder’s profile fits the Australian manager’s system.

The whispers around Celtic have finally turned into something tangible. Out in the Middle East, reports from 365Scores suggest Ange Postecoglou is looking to raid his former club.

Now managing Al‑Nassr, the Australian needs a central midfielder to replace the outgoing Marcelo Brozovic. He has targeted two players, one of whom is Callum McGregor.

McGregor recently changed representation, signing with a Dubai‑based agency. Players do not do that for no reason, especially not when they are Celtic lifers; it signals preparation for a final, massive payday in the Gulf.

Another potential destination, Al Qadsiah, showed interest earlier but hit its limit on foreign players, closing that door. Al‑Nassr remains the primary route and has reportedly secured a preliminary agreement with an unnamed target, awaiting the green light from Saudi authorities.

The Saudi transfer window opens on 22 July, putting time pressure on all parties. Martin O’Neill has tried to downplay the rumours, claiming he has heard nothing directly from his captain about wanting to leave.

O’Neill admitted that a mind‑blowing financial offer changes the equation for any player over thirty and plans a face‑to‑face chat with McGregor very soon.

McGregor’s recent stats show 51 appearances across all competitions, 37 league games, over three thousand minutes, two goals, three assists, nine yellow cards and an average rating of 7.09. At 33, his market value sits around €2 million, and he is contracted until 2028, giving Celtic leverage on any fee.

Holding onto a player against his will rarely works, especially a captain who has won 29 major honours at Parkhead. With European football on the horizon, Celtic cannot afford a massive hole in the engine room and must line up a replacement before the deadline, otherwise a panic signing in late August could be disastrous.

If the Saudi money arrives before the deadline next week, the decision is simple: Celtic must accept the cash, say their goodbyes, and focus entirely on the rebuild.
