From MLS exit to Barça B assistant: Busquets begins coaching
Sergio Busquets, 38, has swapped his playing boots for a coaching badge, joining Juliano Belletti as assistant at Barcelona Atlètic, the club’s fourth‑tier side, after ending his professional career in January following a two‑and‑a‑half‑year spell with Inter Miami in the United States.
Vandaag the club announced that the former Spain midfielder will support Belletti at Barcelona Atlètic, also known as Barça B, which competes at the fourth level of Spanish football in Spanje.
Assistant role at Barcelona Atlètic
Busquets concluded his playing days in January after two and a half years at Inter Miami, where he shared the locker room with Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Jordi Alba.
The MLS‑club is co‑owned by David Beckham, and during Busquets’ stint the team was coached by former Barcelona teammate Javier Mascherano.
Playing legacy and coaching network
At Barcelona, Busquets rose through the youth ranks, winning nine Spanish championships and three Champions League titles while amassing 722 official appearances alongside midfield partners Andrés Iniesta and Xavi Hernández.
Xavi Hernández was recently appointed head coach of the Netherlands national team, and Iniesta has taken up a managerial role at Gulf United in the United Arab Emirates.
In his new role, Busquets may work with young forward Shane Kluivert, who featured 21 times for the reserve side last season, offering the former captain a chance to prove his coaching credentials ahead of the upcoming campaign.
