Dreams drowned: Faten Ben Amar El Azizi’s loss highlights migration peril
The Moroccan women's football community mourns Faten Ben Amar El Azizi, the 20‑year‑old Maghreb Atlético Tetuán forward who drowned while attempting to swim to the coast of Ceuta, a tragedy that underscores the stark contrast between her unfulfilled sporting promise and the perilous migration crisis gripping the Strait.
Her club, Maghreb Atlético Tetuán (MAT), issued an emotional statement saying she "did not seek fame or adventure" but hoped for "a better life and a future that she believed awaited her on the other side of the border," describing her ambition as a "new door" for her future.
MAT added that Faten's "dream ended before it began," emphasizing the heartbreaking loss of a young talent whose journey was cut short before reaching its destination.
Authorities in Spain report that Faten is one of 67 mortal victims of the current crisis, which has driven roughly 60,000 people to attempt the crossing between Morocco and Ceuta.
Morocco has remained completely silent on the matter; no Moroccan institution responded to EFE when asked about the number of victims, injured or missing on Moroccan territory.
Moroccan media, however, cite at least 17 deaths, most of them drownings during the crossing from Fnideq (Castillejos) to Ceuta, adding to the bodies already recovered in the Spanish city.
As the border gradually returns to normal, many people continue to gather at the crossing seeking news of loved ones, most of whom are young and some have been missing for days.
MAT lamented the "high price" paid by many young migrants, noting how irregular attempts turn "dreams into nightmares" and "joy into tears," a stark reminder that the loss of a promising footballer mirrors a broader human tragedy.
