Brawling erupts at Estadio Jaraguay, police intervene as match halts

Andres Felipe Roman was shown a red card in the second half of the Colombian top‑flight clash at Estadio Jaraguay on Sunday, prompting officials to halt play for over 30 minutes as police intervened amid a brawl that had already seen Atletico Nacional lead 3‑0.

Brawling erupted in the Estadio Jaraguay on Sunday when riot police were forced to intervene as Atletico Nacional supporters ripped seats and threw them at each other, prompting a suspension of play during the first half of their 3‑0 win over Jaguares de Cordoba. The incident was reported by Will Pickworth, sports reporter, in a story published at 23:42 BST on 3 August 2026 and updated a minute later, noting that it unfolded in Colombia during a Colombian top‑flight fixture.

During the first half Atletico Nacional raced to a three‑goal lead. Marlon Moreno opened the scoring in the seventh minute, Andrés Sarmiento added a second on the nineteenth minute and former Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos completed the tally at the thirty‑second minute. At the time of the disturbance the visitors were already three goals ahead.

Clashes broke out in the stands as fans ripped out seats and hurled them across the terrace. An estimated 2,000 supporters fled onto the pitch to escape the trouble, while the Monteria Metropolitan Police later revealed that one officer suffered a serious leg injury. Twenty people received treatment for minor injuries and 300 fans were expelled from the ground.

Police rushed onto the field as the violence escalated. Riot police were called in to restore order, and their rapid response was credited with preventing further escalation of the brawl.

The referee halted the game at the Estadio Jaraguay, sending both sets of players to the dressing room. The suspension lasted just over 30 minutes before the match was restarted, allowing play to continue under tight security.

After play resumed, Andres Felipe Roman was sent off, reducing Atletico Nacional to ten men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the team held on to secure the 3‑0 victory.

The final score of 3‑0 stands as the official result, confirming Atletico Nacional's win despite the chaotic circumstances.
