Barcelona’s midfield gap fuels chase for Lille’s 18‑year‑old star
Barcelona’s midfield, packed with Pedri, Gavi, Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo, Frenkie de Jong, Marc Bernal and Marc Casado, is losing a squad member as Casado’s minutes have fallen, prompting the club to look for a fresh midfield option in the upcoming season.
According to AS, Barcelona are among the clubs tracking 18‑year‑old Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, whose World Cup displays for Morocco have made him a standout young talent in Europe. Real Madrid, Paris Saint‑Germain and several Premier League clubs are also in the race, attracted by the sharp rise in his market value after the tournament.
Lille have set an asking price of around €80 million for Bouaddi and have indicated no urgency to sell. The French side secured a contract extension for the player until 2029 and will compete in the Champions League in the 2026‑27 season, giving them leverage to potentially increase his price further.
Barcelona’s financial reality forces the club to scrutinise any large outlay, turning a potential €80 million purchase into a strategic decision rather than a straightforward acquisition. The Catalans favour elite young talent but must balance ambition with fiscal prudence.
Head coach Hansi Flick values intensity, physical capacity and players who can win duels, a profile that Bouaddi matches with his technical gifts and physical readiness. If the teenager continues to develop, he could evolve into the modern midfielder Flick seeks to complement Barcelona’s technically rich midfield.
However, the high price tag and Lille’s unwillingness to accept a bargain make the deal difficult to realise. Barcelona would need a creative financial structure or a price reduction, both of which appear unlikely at present.
For now, Barcelona should keep monitoring Bouaddi while relying on La Masia’s pipeline of midfield prospects. The academy’s output offers a more realistic route to replenish the squad without the financial strain of a €80 million transfer.
