SV Elversberg Secures Bundesliga Promotion, Becomes Smallest Town Club

🇩🇪 18 May 2026

SV Elversberg sealed promotion to the Bundesliga after a 3-0 victory over Preussen Münster in the final round of the 2. Bundesliga, finishing second in the league.

The achievement means the club from Spiesen-Elversberg will compete in Germany's top tier for the first time. The town has just 13,000 residents, sits beneath the shadow of Saarbrücken, and lacks its own train station.

No Bundesliga side has ever come from a settlement as small as Spiesen-Elversberg, making the promotion a historic milestone.

While TSG Hoffenheim originates from a municipality of around 3,000 inhabitants, its matches are played in nearby Sinsheim, so Spiesen-Elversberg officially becomes the smallest location to host Bundesliga football.

Elversberg's home ground, Waldstadion Kaiserlinde, currently holds 10,000 spectators. The club has already drawn up plans to expand capacity to 15,000 as it prepares for the elite level.

The club's rapid ascent began in 2022 with a championship in the fourth tier, followed by an immediate first‑place finish and promotion from the third tier. Last season they fell just short in the promotion playoffs.

Earlier this season, Schalke 04 also secured promotion by winning the 2. Bundesliga, joining Elversberg among the newcomers to the top flight.

Ahead of their inaugural Bundesliga campaign, Elversberg will focus on upgrading facilities and adapting to the higher level of competition.
